033 | A large and rapid Stream which takes its rise from Surface water in Glenbuck, Ph [Parish] of Muirkirk, and after a Course of about 30 Miles falls into the Sea at the town of Ayr. For a few Miles of its Course at first it is only a Small Stream but being joined by the Greenock and Garpal, two of its principal tributaries it becomes Considerable. The last 20 Miles of its course is bounded by Steep banks, generally wooded. A few fertile holms are interspersed along its Margins. In its bed is found a Kind of Claystone, well Known by the name of "Water of Ayr Stone", which is said to be a good whetstone |
