Sheet 44.2 -- Parish of Kirkoswald -- [Page] 7

"Though the existing mansion is of modern construction, having been
"built in 1777, it occupies the site of one of the most ancient
"residences on the coast. It was originally called the Cove,
"and consisted of a strong tower, with minor building, in the
"usual style of the older feudal mansions. ** The modern
"Castle of Culzean is a noble edifice. The projecting rock
"upon which it stands immediately above the sea, is about
"100 feet in height, and almost perpendicular. The style of
"the building is singularly elegant** Its founder was
"David tenth Earl of Cassillis"
