017 | Some Years ago when making improvements in this house which is now occupied by Mr Caldwell Grocer High Street a quantity of Roman Coins were found Many of which Mr Dick Burgh Treasurer had in his possession but at present they have all disappeared Some of them were exhibited in Dumfries and in Glasgow - Provost Campbell was at the finding of them and still retains one of the Coins in his possession. The fact of Roman coins being found at the place marked on trace has been attested by Provost Campbell Mr Grey Town Clerk Mr Dick Treasurer etc. The above is the only trace of any Roman Antiquities which can be authenticated at or about this town up to the present time however further enquiries shall be made about the matter _ |

County of Ayr -- Ph [Parish] Irvine
[Note] -- "We are not aware that any remains of Roman masonry have
been dug up at Irvine, as there was at Ayr; but it seems
extremely likely that one of their stations was fixed on the
high ground, on the banks of the Irvine, where now stands the
town. Roman implements of war, and other vestiges of their
presence, have been found in the vicinity - thus corroborating
the fact of their having continued the causeway, still traceable
at particular parts of the banks of the Irvine, all the way
till the confluence of the water with the sea." -- Paterson's History - Vol. [Volume] 2 page 82
