017 | That a place of public execution was at or about here the names Gallows Muir, Gallows Knowes, and Gallows Well clearly proves. The tradition current about this neighbourhood is also in favor of the Same. David Grey Town clerk States that when a boy he recollects very well that a great many weavers, for subsistence sake, were employed to level the then Sand Hills which were here and there Scattered along the river side, and that an old wooden Stump, and other remains were found at or about the place marked on trace, which was then and now believed to have been part of the Gallows; the above is also certified by Mr Dick Patrick Blair Banker Mr McLachlan Valuater and Provost Campbell |
