" The ancient castle of Ballochtoul stood between two trees at a short distance
" to the south East of the parish Church, in a field graced by what the good folks of the
" burgh style the big tree. This building belonged to the ancient family of the Boyds.
" No traces of the ruins now exist, the last remnant of the fabric having been removed
"about thirty years ago to build a house for the factor on the Bargany Estate."

" Southward from the Kirk of Girvan stands the tower of Ballochtowll, a monument
" of the builder's folly, being raised five story high, without a staircase, & nomore but
