023 | This is a Small Town Situated on the Left Bank of the Irvine Water about 5 miles from Kilmarnock and two miles from Newmilns. A branch of the Glasgow and South Western Rail'y [Railway] passes close to the Town. It has a Parish Church UP. [United Presbyterian] Church Free Church and a Union Chapel. It has also a Parish School a Free School and an adventure School. Fairs are held here on the 3rd Thursday of April, 1st Thursday of June and the last Wednesday of November. Population in 1851. 2538. The inhabitants are chiefly employed in weaving, this is not a Market Town. |
