045.06 | [Situation] In the Sn. [Southern] division of Ph. [Parish] A large village composed of houses one & two stories high the one story houses have each 2 acres of arable land attached, & the two story houses have each 4 acres; the whole is feued from the Duke of Buccleuch; also each of the feuers on the payment of £1.6.0 yearly, have liberty to graze a cow on Park Hill. As there are no public works in the locality the inhabitants only support is obtained by their feus & an occasional days work from the surrounding farms. The present population is about 1100. The principal buildings are the Free Church, U.P. [United Presbyterian] Church an Independent Chapel & the Parish School. There are 3 hiring fairs, 2 sheep fairs & 2 sheep & cattle fairs every year. The village was founded on 4th March 1793. |
