Melrose (Parish) Continued
There is a cross in the centre of the Town of Melrose, near the South entrance of the Monastery, which has a quarter of an acre of land to maintain and it called "Corse Rig" - The name of the "High Cross" marks the site of another, which stood near the Darnick Road, half a mile west, where the pinnacles of St Mary's Central tower first become visible - There are such names of places as Priors' Wood, Cloister Close Abbot and Monks Ford; and the springs still retain the names of Romish Saints, such as St Marys, St William's, St Helen's, and St Dunstan's -

The Tumulus upon the side of the Eildons called by the people the "Bourjo" is worthy of attention - It is evidently artificial, of great magnitude, and by tradition the site if a Pagan Altar -
The road leading to it is called the Haxalgate, and the ravine through which it passes the Haxalgate Heugh
Sir Walter Scott in his 3rd Vol: & 13th chapter of the Pirate calls the Priestess of the Druids - "Haxa" -

Ordnance Survey - Roxburgh county

Ordnance Survey was established in the 18th century to create maps, surveys and associated records for the entirety of Great Britain. These records are arranged by county. This entry has been created to enable searching for Ordnance Survey records for the county of Roxburgh, which is in the south east of Scotland. The boundaries of the county were altered by the Boundary Commissioners in 1891.
