There is a marKet held here on every Monday, And three fairs in the year, viz - at Martinmas, Lammas And the last Wednesday in May; in the town are three good Hotels, The George, The King's Arms, And The Railway, there Are two other public houses of less note, threre are two branch "Banks" one belonging to the BanK of Scotland, And one to The British Linen Company, a Town Hall, a Parish School, Several denominational Schools, And private Seminaries for young Ladies etc Post office: it is wll Supplied with Grocers, And other trades, necessary for so respectable a locality; the houses of the town Are finished with a degree of taste not usual in Such Small places, the Cause of which Seems to be that, a great number of Ladies And Gentlemen visit And reside here during the Summer Months The North British Railway passes on the South Side of the town, And the Directors have erected a very handsome Station here thereby Rendering every facility of travelling to the many Tourists And visiters who frequent Melrose - |
