008.02 | A field in which many Well liKe pits were discovered, having a large quantity of Animal remains in them, but from the very fetid smell that Came from these pits, they had to be closed up immediately. The pits are supposed to have been the Sepulchres of the Roman Town. In this field was discovered a large hewn Slab about 4 ft [feet] 6 In [Inches], by 3 ft [feet] 9 In [Inches], on which is inscribed the letters "CVI" the Slab is in the possession of Mr Wlliamson of Newstead; it is also Stated that about 39 Years ago a man, (now in America) discovered a regular paved road running through this field in a North and South direction, but no person now living can shew where Stone was got or where the paved road is |
