008.01 | A large Village Situated, about a mile north of "Melrose". And about 1/2 a mile from & north of the River Tweed. The houses for the greater part Are apparently very old, but Still in good repair, (what are inhabited of them;) this place has a very picturesque appearance. when viewed from the Melrose Side of the Tweed, It looks like a large wood, with a great number of houses thrown indiscriminately amongst trees - Some high, And Some low, Some new And Some old; the reason is that, nearly every house. is a separate Lairdship, And each being Surrounded by Orchards - gives it the Above appearance. the thoroughfares through it, excepting the principal one are narrow and CrooKed, It has in it a School, Post Office Smithy. And joiners' workshops - And one or two Small groceries, on the east Side a Short distance from the Village there are a few neat residences, And on the west the mansion of Gattonside House. which at a distance looK liKe Sentries placed there, to Keep the houses of the Village in proper bounds - The principet Heritor is Admiral Duncan, Gattonside House - |
