008.01 | Altho' [Although] that this well bears the name of a Saint, it is only modern, - And got this from an eccentic Character in the Village at the time of its formation, which was in 1814, and which date with the name is cut in a Stone over the well, 5 or 6 individuals in the Village at the above date, laid pipes from a Spring which they discovered on the Side of the hill north of this, And conveyed the water to this place by that means - So that there is consequently no well, but the water discharging itself into a trough from the pipe - It is , Situated in the Southwest part of Gattonside (Village), west, and beside the School - A very Excellent spring is the source of this well. - |
