008.01 | This is Said to have been a large Stone "Cross" here which Stood on the north Side of the road leading from DarnicK to Melrose, and about 1/2 a mile from the latter, It Stood on an elevation, And parties Coming from the west, here first saw the pinnicles of the Abbey church of "St. Mary's Melrose", And pilgrims Coming this way to visit the Tomb of "St Waldeuus" recited their prayers at this Cross, before repairing to the Abbey - This cross has given name to a Small district here - And the precise Spot where it Stood is now only a matter of Conjecture, as there is not a vestige of it remaining. |
