A silver urn a gift from Lord Byron stands in one Corner, on a rich stand of Porphyry. The library is connected at the West end with the drawing room, in which are portraits of Mr LocKhart, (sonilaw to Sir Walter) Mrs Scott, and her two daughters, and over the fire place is the portrait of the great bard himself, by Raeburn. In this room are the Set of richly carved ebony chairs, presented to the Baronet by George 4th. This leads into the Armoury, a narrow, low Arched room, which runs quite across the house, having a blazoned window at either Extremity, which contains many relics of historic fame, such as the pistol of Claverhouse, the Sword presented by Charles 1st to the Marquis of Montrose, Rob Roy's long barrelled MusKet, which bears his initials "R.McG", the blunderbuss of Hofer's Lieutenant, the hunting flasK of James 6th, and the pistols of Napoleon, found in his carriage after the battle of Waterloo; and various other curiosities - Communicating with the Armoury is the dining Room, in which apartment the Great [Continued on page 104] |
