009.04 | A School for poor Children. Payment one penny per Week. The Mistress (who superintends the sewing department) receives a fixed salary for her service, but the Master is not salaried. Under the superintendence of the Parochial authorities. The advantages of the Grammar & English schools are monopolised by the Middle class of the Town and suburbs, and the Roxburgh penny a week School is provided for the poorer class; but this Monopoly of ancient institutions and funds is not more conspicuous in Kelso than in other Monastic Towns. A hearse and fire Engine are kept in part of the lower story of the building. The police station adjoins. |

Ordnance Survey - Roxburgh county
Ordnance Survey was established in the 18th century to create maps, surveys and associated records for the entirety of Great Britain. These records are arranged by county. This entry has been created to enable searching for Ordnance Survey records for the county of Roxburgh, which is in the south east of Scotland. The boundaries of the county were altered by the Boundary Commissioners in 1891.
