021.05 | [Situation] On the South of Stone Hill. An old "Keep" or "Tower" Stood on the Summit of Stone Hill, its foundation was removed about Seven years ago by Mr. Henderson, gardener for Lord Campbell - the walls were from Six to Seven feet in thickness. History is silent respecting its origin. It is supposed to have belonged to the Kers of Fernieherst. It may be mentioned that Mr. Henderson, Gardener, turned up an Anglo-Saxon coin near its site - the coin is supposed to be a Styca of Oswald King of Northumberland, whose reign began in 849. Near the Same spot a number of the coins of the Heptarchic period have been found. |
