007.11 | A Substantial Stone building of modern Architecture with Turret or Bellfry attached on the top, at the South-west side: surrounded by a wall which encloses a "Burial Ground". This Church, which is the Established one of the Parish, appears to have been renew'd about the year 1768, shortly before the parishes of Houston and Killallan were united. A part of the Ancient Church of Houston; Dedicated to St. Peter, as mentioned in "Chalmers Caledonia", occupies a portion of the East wing of this Church. Extent shown on Traces. It is now used as the "Session house". Mr. Walter King, Builder and Architect, from his knowledge, considers this portion to be very Ancient, the style of Architecture (which is Gothic) being different from that chosen in the construction of the remainder of the building. The walls are also stronger, being more than 4 feet broad. Owing to alterations made, the flooring of this part has been raised 6 or 8 feet above the level of the ground floor of the Church. It was within this place, and beneath the present flooring, where the remains of many of the Houstonic family were enterred. over |
