007.07 | This is applicable to a stone cross Situated on an eminence about 9 chains east of the farm Steading of that name. It stands upon a pedestal about 3 feet. The cross, including the pedestal, stands about 11 or 12 feet high. There are indentations in the stone which are supposed to be marks or hieroglyphies, but so much defaced that they cannot be tracable. Walter King and others, suppose that a battle took place here between the Scotts and Danes in which the latter were defeated, and that the Cross was erected by the former in commemoration of the event. Crawfurd, in his History of Renfrew, calls it a "Danish Stone, which is called Barochan Cross, full of wreathed work, such as lions and other wild beasts". These would be difficult to decipher. Note: "In the barony of Barochan, and on the side of the public
road, stood an ancient cross, about 11 or 12 feet high, set in
a large pedestal of undrest stone. The cross had been
neatly hewn, with much wreathed carving on all
sides. No letters appear on it; It is much defaced
with ruin and storm. In a square part of the front
are two rows of small images; in the upper row there
are 4 with garments to their feet, and 4 in the
under row: Each seem to hold in their left hand, a
club over their shoulders, that is thickest at the
far end. In a square on the back part there are
also two rows of small figures, 4 in each row,
much defaced, and coarsely executed: But when,
by whom, or on what occasion it was created,
there is no record or tradition. Some call it a [continued on p. 22]
