142 | The town of Kincardine is situated at the south base of a gentle eminence, on the north bank of the Forth. It is irregularly built, the houses chiefly one storey, and, except some few recently erected, all tiled. The only street of any importance is High Street, in which are the principal shops of the town. Formerly its shipping trade was considerable, but at present it is unimportant. Ship building and repairing on a small scale, a canvass factory wrought by hand-looms, and a pretty extensive rope work, are the only works of any note in the town. There are two good stone piers, one for the loading and unloading of vessels, the other for the ferry across the Forth to the pier at Higginsneuk. It has three places of worship, and four schools. "The town of Kincardine is situated on the north bank of the Forth, about midway between Stirling and Edinburgh. It is a burgh of barony. The Trustees of Lord Keith are the superiors, and they appoint baron bailies as magistrates. The town has been very irregularly built. The houses are mostly one storey, and covered with tile, but those recently built contain two or three flats, and are covered with slate. The streets are in a bad state of repair, but there is a prospect of their being improved. There are two good inns in the town, and a post office; also a branch of the Glasgow Union and Commerical banks." Statistical Account. The town is the property of the heirs of the late Lord Keith. It is not a market town, Alloa being the market for the district. The population is between 3 and 4 thousand. |
