Sheet 52.11 Parish of Rattray -- Perthshire

[Name initialled underneath:]
JB
Lt.Col. [Lieutenant Colonel]

"About 2 miles north of the village is
Craighall, which almost exceeds description.
The house stands upon the point of a rock
above the river Ericht, at least 100 feet in height.
It was a place of strength. The river & that high
rock defended it upon the north and west side. There
is no way to it but from the south. There are round towers
at each side of the house & the vestiges of a ditch"
Old Stat [Statistical] Account

"In the perilous times,
which were so frequent
during the reign of our
Scottish Kings, the family
of Rattray removed from
this hill (Castle Hill) to
Craighall, as a place of
security against the sudden
incursions of enemies."
New Stat [Statistical] Account

Transcriber's notes

Craighall appears to be on the east side of the river.

Ordnance Survey - Perth county

Ordnance Survey was established in the 18th century to create maps, surveys and associated records for the entirety of Great Britain. These records are arranged by county. This entry has been created to enable searching for Ordnance Survey records for the county of Perth, which is in central Scotland. The boundaries of the county were altered by the Boundary Commissioners in 1891.
