118 | The remains of this Castle are situated about ΒΌ of a mile to the north of the town, and in the farm yard of the Castle Mains, & consist of a remnant of a wall, which is cemented so firmly, that it was hardly possible to pull it down. It is said to have been used as a hunting seat by King Malcolm Canmore, and also that Edward 1st passed a night there on the 20th June 1296. The whole of the dykes and building in the vicinity are partly built with stone from the Castle. |
