The following is from a history of the City called "The Book of Perth". "The Nunnery of St Leonard the Abbot with its Chapel and Hospital was a short distance South-west of the town and was founded before 1296. After the erection of the Carthusian Monastery this Nunnery was suppressed and its lands and rents were conferred on the Carthusians, who continued the chapel under their patronage Lady Elizabeth Dunbar daughter of George tenth Earl of Dunbar and March became Prioress of the Nunnery in 1411, She had been betrothed or as some allege privately married to the unfortunate David Duke of Rothsay, eldest son of Robert III. Her father is said to have paid to the Duke a large part of her marriage portion and the latter signed a bond under his seal that he would perform his espousal, but in defiance of this contract he married in 1400, in Bothwell church Marjory daughter of Archibald third Earl of Douglas, Lady Elizabeth whom it appears he was compelled to reject devoted herself after his unhappy death to a single life." |
