098 | [Situation] In the norther southern and western parts of the City. The site of the City Walls nearly throughout the whole extent can be traced and some small remains of it exist in two different places. At the S.E. [South East] side of the Free Church in Mill Street & on the South Side of the Towns Lead is to be seen a few yards in length and about 3 or 4 feet high of the ancient wall. It can be easily recognised in the lower part of the present wall on the northern Side of Barret's Close may be seen another part of the wall Standing nearly its original height but only a few feet in length. It is not known by whom or under whose reign the City Walls were originally built On the outside of the walls was a fosse or moat filled with water.
