098 | [Situation] On the east side of South Methven St. A large building two storeys high recently erected but not yet completed in the interior. It is strongly constructed of ashlar worK of yellow sand stone. It was built with money left for the pupose by bequest of the late Mr John Sharpe, a baKer and corn dealer of Perth who died about 3 years ago, being then retired from business for some years. He left about £20,000 ready money part of which consisted of legacies to relations but about £15,000 was left for building and endowing the present institution. It is intended for an educational establishment or schools chiefly for the families of working people, to be under the direction of one principal teacher or Rector with other subordinate teachers, and to consist of four schools two for boys and two for girls, and especially the girls to receive an industrial training which is to be a particular characteristic of the Institution. The Rector is to reside in the building. There are four large classrooms. The education is to be a good English course with also Lation for the boys or such of them as require it. The building cost about £5000. The remainder of the money for endowing the schools is vested in land security bearing interest. The children attending the schools are to be charged moderate school fees. The name was lately decided by the Trustees to be Sharpe's Educational Institution. The date of the bequest is 1857 |
