098 | [Situation] At the east end of the South Street. - Of all the private houses of note in olden times in the City of Perth this was the most noted, especially on account of the transaction Known as the Gowrie Conspiracy which was an attempt of the Earl of Gowrie to assassinate King James VI. The site of the house or Palace as it is sometimes called is now partly occupied by the northern portion of the County Prison and a part of the County Buildings. It extended thence to the Water Vennel and part of it extended a considerable distance along the South Side of said Vennel and some remains of it are still standing along the south side of the vennel " A Curious reminiscence is connected with this waste land" Alexander third Earl of Huntly died on the 19th. of January 1523+ and his Countess Elizabeth Gray who died about 1526+ built a house on the ground which after her decease became the property of the Lord, Ruthven and was the Original Gowrie House William 4th. Lord Ruthven and 1st. Earl of Gowrie enlarged the house built by the countess of Huntly in the summer of 1579" Book of Perth - foot note page 51 + From the above extract it would appear that the house was built about 1525. |
