098 | [Situation] East side of Market Square This place consists of a building two Storeys high situated at the entrance to marKet Square. The Upper storey or flat is called the General Session Ho [House] and is divided in three apartments or divisions the principal is usually called the Presbytery hall another room is used by the ministers of the three churches in which the old Church of St John is divided for their meetings. The third apartment is a sort of antechamber The Presbytery Hall or principal room is used by the general KirK session of the four parishes into which Perth is divided. There are four distinct KirK Sessions which exercise separate an independent functions in ecclesiastical affairs but meet here at stated times as one KirK Session to settle such Civil matters relating generally to the parish of Perth as come within their jurisdiction. The lower storey of the building is divided into two divisions, each entered by a large doorway, one of these is the public weigh for the marKet of Perth. the other was intended for keeping fire engines, but owing [continued on next page] |
