| THE PILLORY STONE | The Pillory Stone. The Pillory Stone. |
Mr. Marshall. Mr. Greig, Town Clerk. |
098 | [Situation] In the middle of the High Street and South side of the National Bank. This is a circular stone set in the middle of the High St.[Street] opposite the National Bank and somewhat resembles a mill stone having a large hole in its centre. Tradition states that here a pillory stood, where offenders were punished in public for petty offences. It was a mode of punishment similar to the Tongs which were attached to the Market Cross, some old people also assert that the punishment of the stocks were inflicted here. A short distance E.[East] of the above stone is a statue of Sir Walter Scott erected on a neat pedestal and surrounded by an iron railing, the statue is of Stone and about one third above life size. |
