111 | [Situation] A few chains S E [South East] of Carpow House Part of the foundations of Some Considerable building is here to be seen; these remains were discovered several years ago and had been partially excavated for the purpose of examining them they consist of the foundations of walls which apparently formed the regular apartments of a house and were found immediately below the surface of the ground built principally of stone with occasionally pieces of brick intermixed with an unusual amount of lime and sand, mortar. The general belief is that it was a Roman work and that there was a small Colony or settlement of that people here for sometime There is also a belief or conjecture that there was a Roman camp somewhere on the lands of Carpow, of which the name would partly lead to such conjecture the first syllable of which is very likely from the ancient British "Caer" i e [that is] a mound, a fortress, &c or from the Irish Ca'ir which has nearly the same signification, In the oldest documents writings in which the name is found it is written Carpol or Carpul, the syllable pol would be the British Pwl, or Gaelic Poll, signifying a ditch, a standing water, a pool &c, |
