125 | "The name is supposed to be derived from St. Blane, a Culdee, and Holme Hill, an eminence or dun overlooking the Cathedral "Statistical Acct.[Account] It is irregularly built on a steep slope on the east bank of the Allan. The streets are narrow and winding. The houses are generally from two to three storeys on the west side facing the river and but one or two at most on the east, owing to the steepness of the ground on which they are, for the most part, built. There are four places of worship & four schools. It has a few small grocer and draper shops, a post office, one hotel and three public houses. A substantial stone bridge of one arch across the Allan , on the turnpike road, connects the small portion of the town on the west side of the river with the principal part on the east. It has none of the priveleges of a City, neither is it generally recognised as such, although some wish to lay claim to the title from it being at one time the seat of a bishopric. Weekly markets were formerly held here but are not now, and it can only be considered now as a large village- It is somewhat frequented by visitors in the summer months on account of its rural beauty, vicinage to Bridge of Allan, and the mineral spring near the north of the village. |
