110 | [Situation] Near the SE [South East] corner of the parish Church. This name applies to a common Grave or headstone in the Ch. [Church] yard of Dron & opposite the S.E. [South East] corner of the Ch. [Church]. Tradition asserts that John Welwood was a Preacher & the son of a clergyman, but that he, himself was not a regularly ordained Minister, although it is said he had had a "Call"; at, and before the time of his death he was preaching in & about Perth but after his death the magistrates of that city would not (probably dare not) permit his remains to be interred in consecrated ground within their jurisdiction. Some of his friends, in this dilemma, took his body thence & brought it to Dron, where however the Minister of that parish would not allow his remains to pass the gate of his Ch. [Church]. Wellwood's friends therefore took the body over the wall & buried it in one Corner of the Ch. [Church] yard. On the Grave stone John Welwood is said to have been a "Minister of the Gospel" but this (continued) [continued on page 10] |
