This fort is popularly known by the name of "Macbeth's Castle" from the fact, as tradition says, that Macbeth had took shelter on it from his enemies during the latter part of his turbulent reign a few years ago Mr. Nairne the proprietor, excavated the east end of it, and on digging a few feet under the surface, 4 rude apartments or chambers were found built of freestone, which Mr. Stewart of Kinrossie says must have been brought from Fifeshire as the same nature of stone is not to be found in this neighbourhood and from this circumstance |
