Playfairs Statl. Acct. [Statistical Account] "To the east end of the hill of Gourdie, about a mile and a half from Spittalfield, may be seen a relic of antiquity, called the Steeds' Stalls. It Consists of eight mounds,with Corresponding trenches. It is thought that this formed the advanced position of the Caledonian Army, in order that they might watch the movements of the Romans, when they lay encamped at Inchtuthill, about two miles to the southward, on the plain below."
