018 | [Situation] About 1 Mile S.E [South East] of Traquair House An extensive Mansion four storeys high occupying three sides of a quadrangle. The building itself, which is massive and irregular, belongs to no recognised Order of Architecture different portions of it having been built at different periods. The great breadth of the walls is, in many places very conspicuous, particularly in the more ancient portions. A portion of the building is used as a private Chapel. The principal entrance is approached through a straight spacious avenue bordered with massive forest trees. There is a large and beautiful vegetable garden attached. This mansion has long been in possession of the Stuart's, and at present is the residence of the Rt. Hon.[Right Honourable] the Earl of Traquair. |
