100 | A slight eminence situated in an arable field and a short distance south east of "St. Mary's Chapel (Site of) also about 1/4 mile south west of "Newhouse", upon the property of John Wylie Esqr. [Esquire] Stromness. The remains of this building were taken away when the place was cultivated a few years ago: But as tradition supplies us with nothing but the peculiar name, nothing can be ascertained relating to its existence further than the supposition among the inhabitants that it was the residence of a Scandinavian Chief who lived and ruled according to his will. No period is assigned for this object nearer than that it is said to have existed prior to the 14th. Century. |
