Parish of Stromness Orkney

William Hay Esqr. [Esquire] Writer, Stromness New Statistical Account Fullarton's Gazetteer

"In the burial-place, there is the ruin of an old church, which probably was erected when popery prevailed or perhaps at a later period."
"Between this (Backness-head) and the town are the ruins of the old parish Church, Surrounded with the cemetery and the remains of an old monastory,"
This graveyard is said to have been used in connection with an ancient Romish chapel, the ruins still stand near the south end of the burial ground, and which is supposed to have flourished some time before the Reformation. The burial ground is still in use,
It is situate close to the seashore about 1 1/2 miles west of the town of Stromness, a short distance west of the "Bay of Nethertown" and immediately east of Monk-house Green
