097 | One of the north-eastern islands of the Orkney group, and lies 1 mile N.N.E. of the nearest part of Pomona; 3 1/4 miles S by W. of Eday; and 4 3/4 miles west of the most southerly part of Stronsay. It extends nearly 5 miles from east to west, and about 4 1/2 miles from north to south; but is sweepingly indented on the north side by a large bay called Viantrow, and has several small indentations on its south side. A mail packet plies daily (weather permitting) between the village of Balfour, at the south-west end of the island, and Kirwall. The whole island is the property of Colonel D. Balfour of Balfour & Trenabie, and is under a prosperous state of cultivation. |
