The Castlegate leads in a S.W.[South West] direction to the castlehill and must have been so called from that ancient fort to which it conducted, this is undoubtedly a very ancient portion of the town. - Hist.[History] of Lanark. Some of the houses are very old. They are in general 2 storeys slated and thatched. Some of the older houses are in a very dillapidated state, but the more modern houses which lie chiefly south of the site of the old Castlegate Port are well built and are principally 2 storeys.- slated and in good repair. |

It was totally removed in 1777 and before the Reformation it would appear to have been a Chapel of Ease to the old Ph.[Parish] Church. |
