This school is so called after Mrs Wilson of Whitburn who mortgaged £1200 for a Charity School for destitute orphans and children of the poor. - The School and School House cost upwards of £200, the remaining sum was lent out at £5 per cent, from which the teacher derives his Salary - The Establishment was limited in the Charter to no less than 25 boys, and as many girls, however the number of scholars (male and female) is geneerally about 70,+++. The teacher is accommodated with a commodious dwelling ho [house] and garden and beside the interest arising from the money mortified, he has also the reversion of the annual rent of a small piece of ground, which the good lady left a little before her death for repairing and keeping up the School and Dwelling House. Hist [History] of Lanark It was erected in 1819, is 2 storeys slated and in good repair. The upper storey being set apart for the teacher's residence, who has also a garden and about 6 1/2 acres of ground belonging to the School. - The names of Scoular and Wilson are always preferred as Candidates for admission into the School. - |
