| URNS AND STONE COFFIN FOUND HERE [Archer's Croft] | 011.14 | Urns have been dug up in the places marked in the field north east of Shott, known as “Archer’s Croft.” “Some of them were found in a large heap of square stones. In the centre of the heap, square stones were placed so as to form a chest, & the urns were placed within it. They contained a kind of unctuous earthy substance & some remains of bones were scattered around them. A stone coffin of the above description, with an urn standing in one corner of it, was found up at Shott. A skull almost entire was found in it — fragments of six larger urns were found in other parts of the field.” New Statl: [Statistical] Account. As stated by the Proprietor, the urns were found 1826 & 1842. The stone coffin containing the skull, was found at the place marked on Trace. | ||
