011.07 | “The principal antiquity in the Parish is the ruin of Blantyre Priory. These are situated on a lofty rock on the banks of the Clyde exactly opposite the ruins of Bothwell Castle.” New Statistical Account. “The ruins of Blantyre Priory, which was founded sometime prior to the year 1296, are finely situated in a most retired situation, on the top of a rock which rises perpendicular from the Clyde.” Fullarton’s Gazetteer. The walls of the ruins of the Priory are from 4 to 5 links thick, they are built of Freestone. The ruin on the north side of the Priory, shown on Examination Trace in a firm line, is in a better state of preservation than any of the remaining parts. Parts of the window sills & gable ends remain. The gable ends show this part of the Priory to have been not more than one Story high. There are some trees growing within the walls of the ruins, as shown on Trace. The walls standing are entwined with Ivy. There is an arched roof in good preservation, to an irregular shaped portion of a ruin at the south end of the Priory.
