023; 029; 030; 031; 035; 036 | Strathavon parish is an extensive district, which is drained by the Upper Avon and its tributary streams. This district obtained its name from the Celtic Strath, a valley, and Avon, a river which runs through it; so that Strathavon signifies the valley of the Avon. By the Scoto-Saxon settlers, it was called Avondale according to the genius of their speech Chalmers "Avondale is bounded on the north by the Parishes of Glassford, and East Kilbride; on the west by Loudoun, Galston, and Sorn; on the south by Muirkirk and Lesmahagow; and on the east by Lesmahagow, Stonehouse and part of Glassford". " The parish is not infrequently named Strathaven or Straven; but Avondale is the proper name. Dale seems to be more descriptive of the face of the Country than Strath. There is a considerable town in the parish named Strathaven; so that now Strathaven is the name uniformly applied to the town, and Avondale to the Parish". New Stat [Statistical] Acct [Account] |

Ordnance Survey - Lanark county
Ordnance Survey was established in the 18th century to create maps, surveys and associated records for the entirety of Great Britain. These records are arranged by county. This entry has been created to enable searching for Ordnance Survey records for the county of Lanark, which is in the west of Scotland. The boundaries of the county were altered by the Boundary Commissioners in 1891.
