033.06 | This is one of the few instances in Scotland where Chester [underlined] is applied to the remains of a Roman Camp, the derivation being evidently from the ^Latin^ word Castra - a camp. It is generally believed, by the inhabitants in its vicinity, to have been a Roman Station; although all that remains of the Camp at present are two circular ramparts, 5 feet high and 240 feet in diameter, yet it is generally acknowledged to have had an outer quadrangular enclosure-this, however, has been long since entirely defaced. No antiquities have been found at it. |
