019.13 | It appears from the Stat: Acct: that prior to the Reformation the Parish Church was dedicated to St. Luke (see extract under the head of "supposed site of St. Lukes Ch: and Cistercian Abbey" in Plan 18.16.) and that subsequent to the Reformation this building was still used as a place of worship, of which positive evidence is obtained from the Stat. Acct. which states that "During the earlier part of the reign of the 1st Charles a manifest was published at Carluke Kirk door denouncing the reigning Monarch etc. etc." The Church was however gradually allowed to fall into decay until the erection of the present Parish Church in 1799 when it became entirely disused. all that remains at present of the ancient pile is its Belfry which is about 60 feet high and from which the old P[aris]h Bell is still suspended. and the remains of portions of two aisles the larger one being about 3 or 4 feet above the surface and the smaller one almost level with the ground the |
