"St. Luke, - a name applicable to the elevated nature of the
"greater portion of the Parish." A traditional Account copied in
page gives a different derivation for the name of the Parish.
"The length of the Parish from West to East, is about 8 miles, and
"its greatest breadth 4½ miles. It is bounded on the South by Lesma-
"hagow, from which it is divided by the River Clyde; on the west by
"Cambusnethan, Garrion Gill dividing the two Parishes; on the
"north, likewise by Cambusnethan; and on the east and South
"east, by Carnwath, Carstairs, and Lanark, the boundaries between
"the latter Parish and it being March Gill."

Besides the town of Carluke, "there are three small villages in the
"parish viz.[videlicet] Braidwood, Kilncadzow and Yieldshields" Stat. Accnt.[account]
The parish church is situated in the North West of the town the
Manse in the South East, and the parish School in the West. There are 4
other schools in the town of Carluke, also a U.P. Church and Manse,
a Free Church and Manse, a Roman Catholic Chapel & school
a United Original Secession Church and Manse, and a Congregational
Chapel. It also contains a post Office, a Branch of the City of
Glasgow Bank, a Branch of the British Linen Company's Bank, also
three Inns and 8 Public houses.
The turnpike roads from Stirling to Carlisle, and from Glasgow to
Carnwath pass through the parish.
The parish contains 15410 Statute Acres, there are no
detached portions of this parish, nor are there any detached portions
of any other Parish situated within it.
