THE CARLUKE GAZETTE
KILCADZOW OR KILNCADZOW

A would be authority on spelling recently broadcast the
statement that the present form " Kilcadzow" is wrong and that
"Kilncadzow" should be used. this is entirely wrong as the
simpler form is the original and has been used for at least
seven hundred years, whereas the use of the letter "n" has been
used for only a short period, probably not more than one hundred
years.

As the prefix "Kil" means cell, the original names seems to have
been due to a religious hermit named Cadzow having a cell in the
village.

The form "Kiln" can only be due to the pevalence of lime
workings at the time when the burning operations were done in
lime kilns but these have been entirely discontinued for the
past 14 years at least.


Anyone wishing to corrobarate the use of the simpler
spelling need only refer to documentary evidence in the Register
House, Edinburgh, and for continued use to such publications as Vol.
4 of "The Ordnance Gazetter of Scotland" and "The History of South
Lanarkshire".

About 14 years ago the Lanarkshire County Council issued a
request that the sue of the letter "n" in the name should be
discontinued and wide notification was given, including that to the
"Hamilton Advertiser", which at once changed the district news
heading from "Kilncadzow" to "Kilcadzow".
