Description: The ruins of a large house once the seat of Lord Herries who made a conspicuous figure in the reign of the unfortunate Mary Queen of Scots. he also had the honour of affording her a night's lodging in this house when on her flight from the battle of Langside to England
[written in a different hand and pen] Note. It is situated on a small knoll and probably may have been at one time surrounded with water or a swamp - as the soil on all sides appear alluvial.
