| WILLIAMSON'S STONE | Williamson's Stone Williamson's stone |
Robert Coupland Thomas Johnston |
033 | A small standing stone about 3 feet in height and about 14 inches in the square, situated in a field about 20 chains North of Drumjohn farm house. This stone was placed here to commemorate the following circumstances. In April 1807 a Cattle dealer from Dumfries named Alexander Williamson was shot dead here, by a man named Maitland Smith who pursued him from Dumfries for the intention of robbing him of his money but was disappointed owing to Williamson having no money in his possession at that time. On the stone is inscribed A.W. 1807 being the initials of Williamson and the date of the Murder. |
