004 | A large And irregularly shaped lake presenting an highly interesting a picturesque piece of water, island & mountain Scenery, extending N. & S. [North & South] for About 9 Miles, varying in breadth generally from 1 to ½ a Mile, the greater part of its eastern margin forms that part of the boundary between the Shires of Ayr & KirKcudbright. It is studded with numerous islands, nearly all of which have names, but the one of most note is 'Castle Island' (see description) on which Stands Loch Doon Castle (in ruins) (See description) It is well stocked with pike And trout of good quality And is frequented by Salmon in their Spawning Season it is Supplied by many mountain Streams And Springs within itself And empties its Superfluitant water by 'River Doon' into the 'Frith of Clyde'. |
