027 | [Situation] Over the River Nith a short distance South of The New Bridge An old Bridge consisting of 6 semicircular arches. It was built in the 13th century) by Devorgilla daughter of Allan Lord of Galloway. & Mother of John Baliol King of the Scots. since its first foundation it has undergone many repairs. It first consisted of 9 arches 3 of these have been taken down to widen the street along the river on the Dumfries side, fears having been entertained that it was in a tottering state a project was formed in 1789. to build a new bridge, which was carried into effect. this bridge cannot be passed with cars or any vehicle as it is ascended by a flight of steps in the Dumfries side, It is still in a firm condition. "The original dimensions of the bridge were. length 400 ft. [feet] breadth. within the parapets, 13 ft [feet] 6 in [inches] mean width; The parapets included 16 ft [feet] 2 in [inches] height from the top of the parapet to the water 26 ft [feet] upon the bridge was a small gate called the "Port. which was considered the boundary between Nithsdale & Galloway. there being 6 arches of the bridge within the latter & 3 within the former" -- Groses Antiquities Vol [Volume] 1.
