[Note] -- Maxwelltown has a court-house of Sufficient demensions for
accommodating the meetings of the magistrates and justices of peace
of the district, and the courts of the Sheriff when he officiates in this
quarter. Below the court-house is the jail wherein delinquents apprehended
within the burgh can be lodged till arrangements are made for
removing them to Kirkcudbright - a distance of 27 miles, whence
they are Sent back to stand their trial at Dumfries -- Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] of Kirkcudt [Kirkcudbright] - 1845 -
